A heavily used car park in Wokingham will close despite an application to build homes on it being refused.
Euro Car Parks which owns and runs a large section of the Denmark Street Car Park in Wokingham , has confirmed the car park will close on Monday, August 26.
The car park was subject to a plan for 77 new homes.
But that plan was thrown out last month , and now the company has decided to shut the car park.
The potential loss of the car park sparked fierce protests from people in the town, leading to one of the reasons for refusal being it “would result in the permanent physical loss of town centre parking infrastructure which is necessary to support the planned growth and renaissance of Wokingham town centre”.
Imogen Shepherd-DuBey, Wokingham Town Council leader, said: “This will be devastating for the town.
“It is one of our more popular car parks and people with moderate disabilities prefer it because it is level to the ground and near the shops.
“We hope that some arrangement can be made and this car park won’t be closed.
“I personally think they are closing it because when the application was submitted there were lots of complaints about losing the car park.
“If it is closed for a while, fewer people will complain.”
BerkshireLive understands businesses beside the car park which have parking permits will still be able use them but the rest of the Euro Car Parks area will be closed to the public. The council owned section of the car park, closest to the library, will remain open.
A petition has also been launched by town councillor Daniel Hinton fighting the plans.
It reads: “As of midnight on Monday the 26th of August the landlord (Lunar Office Sarl) will be closing Denmark street car park for good.
“This follows a denied planning application on this car park for overly expensive flats.
“Denmark Street car park is a needed part of the Wokingham infrastructure and this petition is to say to Wokingham Borough Council and Lunar Office that we would like for you to come up with a solution that keeps our car park open.
