Harrogate: Mads Pedersen won a brutal, rain-ravaged race in Yorkshire on Sunday to become Denmark’s first men’s road world champion.
The 23-year-old did not appear in any pre-race predictions, but he seized his chance to claim a stunning victory as the big names fell away.
After an attritional 261 kilometres in diabolical weather conditions, the 23-year-old found himself in a three-man fight for gold and timed his sprint to perfection to beat Italian Matteo Trentin. Swiss Stefan Kung was third.
Trentin looked favourite as the trio rounded the last corner before the long drag up Parliament Street to the finishing line.
